The Stem Cell Therapy Procedure

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy is the use of your body’s own stem cells to repair a joint. The procedure involves four main steps.

  1. Cells will be extracted using a mini-liposuction procedure where adipose (fat) tissue will be extracted.
  2. This will be put through a process called ultrasonic cavitation which will remove all tissue except stem cells and other growth cells – the remaining cells are known as SVF (stromal vascular faction) cells.
  3. The SVF cells will be tested for quality using a flow cytometer. This ensures we are giving your stem cell procedure the best chance of success.
  4. The SVF cells will be injected back into your body either through an IV or injected directly into the joint using ultrasound technology to guide the injection.

After the procedure it is recommended that you have a follow up appointment with Norwood Day Surgery 3 days, 2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months after your procedure. Your doctor will discuss your progress with you and may utilise standardised pain tests such as WOMAC or HOOS depending on the joint where you received treatment.
